Principal in Residence Program

The Principal in Residence (PIR) program is a highly selective, one-to-two-year residency designed to prepare aspiring school leaders with the adaptive, technical, and managerial skills to lead a KIPP Chicago school as a successor school leader.  

All PIRs are full-time members of their school leadership teams and will have daily opportunities to practice the skills and competencies required to lead high-performing schools.

PIRs are on an accelerated track to become a Successor School Leader at a KIPP Chicago school. All PIRs are full-time members of their school leadership teams and will have daily opportunities to practice the skills and competencies required to lead high-performing schools while working under the leadership of a Mentor School Leader.

As a PIR, you are a full-time member of your residency school leadership team. You will be supported in your development by a Mentor School Leader, a Director of PIR Development, and your cohort of PIRs.

School Leader Role

KIPP Chicago aims to develop all PIRs towards the school leader seat within 1-2 years, contingent on the right school match and progression through the Development Roadmap skills. PIRs will not always assume a school leader position at their current school placement. 

Program Overview

Coaching by Mentor School Leader

PIRs lead at a high-performing school with intensive on-the-ground development. You will be exposed to excellent school design and provided a Mentor School Leader who serves as the model and coach for strong leadership.

Development Roadmap & Performance Assessments

Each PIR has a development plan that is aligned with research-based skills critical to effective school leadership. You will receive ongoing coaching and observations to help you achieve proficiency of the skills needed to demonstrate school leader readiness.

Formal Professional Development

As a PIR, you will receive formal professional development aligned to the Development Roadmap and targeted learning opportunities tailored to your developmental needs.

Readiness Checkpoints

Quarterly readiness checkpoints provide an opportunity for the PIR, the Mentor School Leader, the Director of PIR Development and other regional stakeholders to reflect on progress towards School Leader Readiness.

Transition Planning

PIRs receive ongoing support in their succession planning as they prepare to assume the role of School Leader.

Application Process & Deadlines

Submit a formal application including resume and cover letter highlighting qualifications and the interest in the Principal in Residency Program.

Friday, October 20, 2023
Applicants meeting qualifications will be scheduled for a 45 minute call by or before Friday, November 3, 2023, to evaluate initial selection criteria. Those chosen to move forward will be assigned a performance task.

Reference Check
Required submission of 3 – 5 professional references, preferably your most recent supervisor and others highly familiar with your success.

Monday, November 27, 2023
Final Day Interview
Final interviews will consist of a full-da of in-person interviews with KIPP Chicago senior and school-based leadership

Readiness Requirements

KIPP Chicago is looking for proven instructional and student culture leaders ready for the next step in their development:
  • A strong candidate for Principal-in-Residence is someone who currently serves as an Assistant Principal, Dean of Instruction, Instructional Coach, or another role responsible for establishing positive school-wide student and staff culture and leading teacher development.
  • Can demonstrate evidence of driving ambition academic results
  • A desire to be a School Leader in 1 to 2 years
